“IT’S THE EXPRESSION ON THEIR LITTLE FACES I LIKE, said the Hogfather.
Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
“You mean sort of fear and awe and not knowing whether to laugh or cry or wet their pants?”
YES. NOW THAT IS WHAT I CALL BELIEF.”
“It was nice to hear the voices of little children at play, provided you took care to be far enough away not to hear what they were actually saying.”
Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
“NO. YOU NEED TO BELIEVE IN THINGS THAT AREN’T TRUE. HOW ELSE CAN THEY BECOME?”
Terry Pratchett, Hogfather
Hogswatch is the winter holiday on the Discworld. There are certain similarities between our Santa and the Hogfather: He rides in a sleigh, drawn by boars, and distributes presents.

This is the first I’ve heard of him, but I love your quotes, Elke. Terry Pratchett sounds pretty humorous. 🙂

The discworld novels are jam-packed with humour and with references to basically everything, popular culture, ancient culture, philosophy, music. I’ve read all the novels (over 40!) at least twice and I find new references every time I pick up a book.

Wow, 40 and you’ve read them twice, that’s 80. Whew. I need to get back to reading more. I’d have to count on two hands and both feet how many books I’ve read this year. Of course, they are long books. It’s hard to read when you are counting your toes, and notice that your toenails are too long, and the fingernail clipper is missing, then your cat jumps on you and his claws ruin your blouse, so you have to get up and look for the clippers for him too. My hat is off to you for taking the time to read so many novels. What other books do you enjoy?

I have very eclectic taste (hint, hint, my nick …). But these days I listen to a lot of audiobooks and when I find a narrator whose voice I like I pick up books that they have read even if they are not necessarily my kind of books. I would listen to anything that Andy Serkis has recorded, he is amazing. He managed to read Lord of the Rings with hundreds of different voices, not just Gollum, simply stunning. Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield in The Hobbit) has a voice that has been described as “ear candy”. He has recorded Dickens novels and I love listening to him.

That is really good information, Elke. Amazon has been after me for years to get the audio book subscription.

I have that – there are good alternatives in Germany from public libraries but their English offerings are not great (mainly crime, true crime, and romance). It’s how Amazon got me in the beginning – the English novels (than still in paper) were just a lot cheaper than in the local bookstores, and I mean A LOT. Stephen Fry reads his own books, btw, that’s also something I really enjoy.

I like Amazon for lots of reasons. Mostly because I can get the book instantly on Kindle without ever leaving my home. That means if I read something on a blog that sounds interesting, I can order it immediately before I forget! LOL I will check out these leads, Elke!

I used to be young and beautiful. Now I’m only “and” (old, old chestnut).
