Children put a boot outside their door and wait for the telltale heavy steps. He brings small presents – traditionally apples, nuts and tangerines. By the time I was little he also brought chocolate. And today there may be toys. I think that’s where the stocking fillers of British and American traditions originated.
I got a new coffee mug, some chocolate and a bottle of medicine which he picked up for me and saved me a trip. His visit was also a reminder that the time has come to make my Christmas wish list. Here it is:
